Sleep Training Tips
Helping your child develop healthy sleep habits is essential for their growth and well-being. Sleep training involves teaching your baby or toddler to fall asleep independently and sleep for longer stretches. There are different methods, and what works best will depend on your child’s temperament and your family’s comfort level.
When to Start Sleep Training
- Most babies are ready for sleep training between 4-6 months when they can self-soothe.
- Before 4 months, focus on establishing healthy sleep habits, but do not expect full sleep independence.
- If your baby has medical concerns or you’re unsure, consult your pediatrician before starting sleep training.
Setting Up a Healthy Sleep Foundation
1. Create a Consistent Bedtime Routine
A predictable routine signals to your baby that it’s time to sleep. Start 20-30 minutes before bedtime and include:
- A warm bath
- Gentle massage
- Feeding (if needed)
- Reading a book or singing a lullaby
- Placing baby in the crib drowsy but awake
2. Establish an Ideal Sleep Environment
- Keep the room dark (use blackout curtains)
- Use white noise to block out household sounds
- Keep the room at a comfortable 68-72°F (20-22°C)
- Lay baby on a firm, flat sleep surface (crib or bassinet)
- Avoid sleep props like rocking or feeding to sleep (unless you plan to continue them long-term)
Sleep Training Methods
There are different sleep training approaches. Choose one that fits your parenting style.
1. The “Cry It Out” (Extinction) Method
- Place baby in the crib awake and leave the room.
- Do not return unless needed for safety.
- Baby may cry initially but learns to self-soothe.
- Usually works within 3-5 nights.
- Works best for parents who are comfortable letting baby cry for longer periods.
2. The Ferber Method (Check and Console)
- Place baby in the crib awake and leave the room.
- If baby cries, return at increasing intervals (e.g., 3 min, 5 min, 10 min) to briefly reassure without picking up.
- Helps babies learn to self-soothe while knowing a caregiver is near.
- Takes 4-7 nights to be effective.
3. The Chair Method
- Place baby in the crib and sit in a chair nearby.
- Gradually move the chair farther away each night until you’re out of the room.
- Takes 1-2 weeks but is a gentle approach.
4. The Pick-Up/Put-Down Method
- Place baby in the crib awake.
- If they cry, pick them up, soothe them briefly, then place them back down.
- Repeat as needed until they fall asleep.
- This method requires patience but works well for parents who prefer a gentle transition.
5. No Tears (Fading) Method
- Slowly decrease sleep associations like rocking or feeding until baby falls asleep independently.
- Takes 2-4 weeks, but is best for parents who prefer a gentler approach.
Daytime Tips to Improve Sleep Training
- Follow age-appropriate wake windows (too much or too little daytime sleep affects nighttime sleep).
- Expose baby to natural light during the day to regulate their sleep-wake cycle.
- Ensure naps are in a consistent place (crib or bassinet) rather than swings or car seats.
- Offer plenty of playtime and tummy time to tire them out.
Common Sleep Training Challenges & Solutions
My baby cries too much!
- Adjust the method to a gentler approach like the Ferber or Chair Method.
My baby keeps waking up hungry.
- Ensure they get enough calories during the day and consider a dream feed if under 9 months.
My baby wakes up too early (before 6 AM).
- Adjust bedtime earlier or later based on overtiredness.
- Ensure the room is completely dark in the morning.
Sleep training isn’t working!
- Stick to one method for at least a week before switching.
- Ensure a consistent bedtime and wake time every day.
When to Consult a Pediatrician
If your baby is struggling with sleep despite training efforts, or if you suspect reflux, allergies, or other medical conditions, consult your pediatrician.
By setting consistent routines and expectations, your baby can learn to sleep independently and develop lifelong healthy sleep habits.
